About MetricCanvas

MetricCanvas is a free, browser-based image measurement tool built for anyone who needs accurate real-world dimensions from a photograph, floor plan, blueprint, map, or technical drawing — without specialist software.

What the tool does

You upload an image, click two points whose real-world distance you know (a door frame, a printed scale bar, a ruler in shot), enter the measurement, and MetricCanvas establishes the scale for the entire image. From that single calibration you can draw as many measurement lines as you need, anywhere on the image. Every line shows its real-world value in metres, feet, centimetres, or any unit you choose.

The canvas is infinite and supports multiple images as independent layers. Each layer keeps its own calibration, so you can work with a site plan and a detailed floor plan side by side on the same session. Measurements can be labelled, exported as an annotated PNG, or downloaded as a CSV or TXT data table.

Who it is for

MetricCanvas is used across a wide range of fields:

  • Architecture and interior design — measure floor plan scans, verify room proportions, and annotate drawings for client presentations without CAD software.
  • Construction and engineering — read dimensions from blueprint scans, check material take-offs, and cross-reference measurements when the original CAD file is unavailable.
  • Real estate — measure room sizes from listing photos or agency-provided plans before visiting a property in person.
  • Research and science — measure features in microscopy images, satellite photographs, experimental diagrams, or any image with a known reference object.
  • DIY and home improvement — photograph your space, calibrate against a tape measure, and plan furniture placement before buying materials.
  • Education — a quick, free way to introduce scale, calibration, and measurement concepts using real images in class.

Privacy by design

MetricCanvas runs entirely in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server, never transmitted over the network, and never stored anywhere except your own device. This makes it safe to use with confidential architectural plans, proprietary engineering drawings, or any sensitive material.

Session data — your layers, calibrations, and measurements — is saved automatically in your browser's local storage so you can close the tab and return to your work later. Clearing your browser data removes the session.

How it is built

MetricCanvas is a client-side web application built with Vue 3 and Nuxt. All measurement calculations use standard Euclidean geometry: a calibration ratio is derived from a known reference, and every subsequent pixel distance is multiplied by that ratio to yield a real-world value. There is no AI inference, no remote computation, and no data collection.

The tool is available in nine languages: English, Spanish, Catalan, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Japanese. The interface is fully responsive and works on mobile, tablet, and desktop browsers.

MetricCanvas is free to use and supported by non-intrusive display advertising delivered through Google AdSense. Ads are shown on content pages and within the tool sidebar. You can control ad and analytics cookies at any time through the cookie preferences banner.
